Guide

Access
NewspaperARCHIVE is a database of newspapers from the U.S. and abroad from the late 1700's to the present. Most coverage does not extend beyond
1977 and dates of coverage vary with newspaper title. At present, some states
are covered more than others. However, the database is constantly growing. NOTE: The
newspaper images have been converted from microfilm and quality depends on the
quality of the original source.
Getting Started
- Access
from outside a library requires a username and password. Contact your
academic, public, or school librarian for the login information.
Searching
- Entering a term on the Quick
Search box returns quick results that can then be narrowed. For
best results, enclose phrases in quotation marks.
- Use the Browse Available
Newspapers tab to narrow results by location, date, or publication
title. NOTE: These are three separate operations. You can not combine
location with date in one search.
- Browse By Location - You can be as broad or
narrow as you would like. Selecting "United States", "West Virginia" and leaving the other fields set to "all" will return all
publications available in West Virginia.
- Browse By Date - Provides three options:
- Exact Date - this will give you all of the
newspapers available from the date you have chosen.
- Between Dates - this will give you the
newspapers available between the beginning date and end date you have
chosen.
- Between Years - this will give you the
newspapers available between the years you have selected.
- Browse By Title – If you know the title of
the newspaper you're looking for, click the letter the title begins with
and view a list of publications starting with that letter.
- The Advanced Search
feature allows you to build your search request to get more specific
results.
Your Search Results
- The results list highlights the search terms and provides
tools to the right of the list to refine keywords or further narrow the
results by location and date.
- Each item in the result list has three distinct pieces of
information.
- Publication Title. This will open up the
selected newspaper page. Each result is in .pdf format and can only be
opened with Adobe®Reader of comparable software.
- Abstract. This gives you a quick look at
the context of the search terms.
- Metadata. Clicking on any one of the three
components, date, city, or state, will further limit your search. Click
on the “Tools, Tips, and Tricks” box on the results screen for more
details.
Your Browse Results
- The browse results page has three distinct pieces of
information: Publication Title, City, and State.
- Publication Title - This tells you which
publication(s) fit your browse parameters. When clicked, the publication
title opens a list of available publication dates.
- City and State – By clicking on a specific
city or state, you can add that parameter to your browse
request without using the refine tool of returning to the main search
page.
o Sorting
– By clicking on any of the column headers, you can sort the results by
ascending/descending alphabetical order.
Printing/Saving Your Results
- Use the Print
or
Save
icon
on the .pdf image or your browser and follow the directions on the screen.
- There is also
an “order print” option on the .pdf screen.
